Press TV – Syria CW removal deadline won’t be met: OPCW, UN

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the United Nations says the deadline of December 31 for the removal of Syria’s chemical arms stockpile will not be met.
“A number of external factors have impacted upon timelines, not least the continuing volatility in overall security conditions, which have constrained planned movements,” the OPCW and the UN said in a joint statement on Saturday.

‘More than 4,000 European jihadists fighting against Assad’

The French-language Belgian daily La Libre Belgique on Friday cited a Belgian security source saying that “four to five thousand” European jihadists were waging war in Syria. This number far exceeds the figure in a late November study by Norwegian counterterrorism specialist Thomas Hegghammer, which said that “at least 1,200 European Muslims have gone to Syria since the start of the war.”

Robert Parry – NYT Backs Off Its Syria-Sarin Analysis

For months, the “slam-dunk” evidence “proving” Syrian government guilt in the Aug. 21 Sarin attack near Damascus was a “vector analysis” pushed by the New York Times showing where the rockets supposedly were launched. But the Times now grudgingly admits its analysis was flawed.
The New York Times has, kind of, admitted that it messed up its big front-page story that used a “vector analysis” to pin the blame for the Aug. 21 Sarin attack on the Syrian government, an assertion that was treated by Official Washington as the slam-dunk proof that President Bashar al-Assad gassed his own people.
But you’d be forgiven if you missed the Times’ embarrassing confession, since it was buried on page 8, below the fold, 18 paragraphs into a story under the not-so-eye-catching title, “New Study Refines View Of Sarin Attack in Syria.” – Syria gov’t claims evacuation of 5,000 near Damascus

Syria’s government said it evacuated 5,000 residents of the town of Adra near the capital Damascus over the weekend, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.
”Thanks to the efforts of the Syrian army, the ministry of social affairs evacuated more than 5,000 residents of the town of Adra,” SANA said late Sunday, saying the operation was on Saturday.
”They were trapped by terrorist groups and are now in a safe place,” the agency added. – Damascus asks UNSC to make Turkey answerable for aiding terrorists in Syria

Official Damascus has asked the UN Security Council (UNSC) to make Turkey and other countries answerable for their help to terrorists, who are crossing into Syria, and for arms supplies to terrorists.
In a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and to the Head of the UN Security Council that was released today, Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations Bashar Jaafari said that such conduct is a brazen violation of the resolutions of the international guiding bodies, including the resolutions of the UN Security Council.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Soraya Sepahpour Ulrich, independent researcher and writer, from California, to discuss recent developments in Syria.

Press TV – Syria committed to Iran’s presences in Geneva 2: FM

Damascus says it is committed to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s participation in the Geneva 2 conference on the situation in Syria next month.
Syria is committed to Iran joining the peace conference,” said Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on Sunday.
It is illogical that the United States or the so-called opposition exclude this country from the conference for political reasons,” the foreign minister said.
At a press conference held after a meeting with US and Russian officials in the Swiss city of Geneva on December 20, UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said that there was no agreement on participation of Iran yet.
It’s no secret that we in the United Nations welcome the participation of Iran,” Brahimi said, adding that the US opposed the idea. – Danish, Norwegian ships off Cyprus making preparations to remove Syria’s chemical weapons

A flotilla consisting of two dry -cargo ships and two frigates, offered by Denmark and Norway, off Cyprus, is making preparations for the removal of Syria’s chemical weapons. The frigates, “ Esbern Snare” and “ Helge Ingstad”, will accompany the two frigates, which will have to take the containers with more than 1,000 tons of dangerous chemical substances from Latakia a representative of the Danish- Norwegian operation Ainstein Malkenes Kwarving told newsmen. – OPCW-UN Underline Progress With Syria’s Chemical Weapons As Intelligence Leaks To Al Qaeda

The Joint Mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the United Nations (UN), which is tasked with the dismantling of Syria’s chemical weapons capabilities, expressed that significant progress has been made in its work. Meanwhile, there remain security concerns about the safe transportation of the chemical weapons to the Syrian port of Lattakia. A recent, large scale attack by Saudi Arabia sponsored Liwa-al-Islam and Jabhat al-Nusrah mercenaries suggests that certain countries which are supporting the terrorist organizations, are leaking high-level intelligence about planned transports to the terrorists.

Analysts have previously warned of a possible scenario where large scale attacks on chemical weapons transports by Saudi and Western backed mercenaries, or a chemical weapons transport that is falling into the hands of “Al-Qaeda”, could be used as a pretext for renewed calls for a foreign military intervention in Syria.

Press TV – New video shows atrocities committed by Syria militants

A new video has emerged on the Internet, showing atrocities committed by foreign-backed militants fighting against the Syrian government.
The shocking footage showed militants who had cut off the head of a government soldier killed in the northern city of Aleppo.

Russia’s Stance on the Syrian Crisis

Today, delegations from 26 countries have agreed to participate in the Geneva-2. They are to put an end to the conflict in Syria and stop the bloodshed on the basis of the Geneva Communiqué of June 30, 2012. This goal is difficult to achieve: numerous radical groups, for whom the peace process isn’t profitable at all, are operating in the country.
Nevertheless, all the participants of the “Syrian story” understand: the peak of the conflict is in the past, they have once again managed to prevent a full-scale war in the Middle East. Of course, diplomatic battles are still going on; how can we do without them. But Damascus is already thinking about its peaceful future. On December 25, Syria signed a 25-year agreement on oil and gas exploration in its territorial waters with the Russian Soyuzneftegaz company.

Patrick Cockburn – Sunni monarchs back YouTube hate preachers: Anti-Shia propaganda threatens a sectarian civil war which will engulf the entire Muslim world

There is now a fast-expanding pool of jihadis willing to fight and die anywhere. The Saudis and the Gulf monarchies may find, as happened in Afghanistan 30 years ago, that, by funding or tolerating the dissemination of Sunni-Shia hate, they have created a sectarian Frankenstein’s monster of religious fanatics beyond their control.

Working Together: Russia and China conduct their First Joint Military Operations

Russia and China are in charge of providing security for the Syrian government’s chemical arsenal as it is being taken out of the country, a senior Russian diplomat said on Wednesday.
“We have undertaken ensuring that those chemicals are safely loaded onto Dutch and Norwegian container ships and safely transported while in Syrian waters. In other words, we will convoy these vessels,” Mikhail Ulyanov, head of the foreign ministry’s security and disarmament department, told RIA Novosti.
“We are not going to do this on our own, our Chinese partners will assist us,” he said. “It will be the first time when the military of Russia and China will perform their professional tasks side-by-side in a real-life crisis, not during joint drills.”
The operation to destroy the Syrian government’s arsenal of more than 1,000 metric tons of weapons-grade chemicals is due to take place in two stages. The most dangerous weapons have to be removed from Syria by the end of December and destroyed at sea by April, whereas the rest is slated for destruction by mid-2014. – Syria ‘unlikely’ to meet chemical deadline – UN

Syria is ”unlikely” to meet a December 31 deadline to transport its most dangerous chemical arms out of the country, the United Nations acknowledged Saturday.

Press TV – Syria talks should focus on fighting terrorism: Syria FM

Referring to militant groups fighting against the Syrian government, Muallem went on to say that the international peace talks between Syria’s warring sides should also focus on “compelling the countries which are supporting these groups to stop funding, arming and hosting these groups because ending terrorism in Syria is the basis for the success of any political solution.”

Press TV – Syria militants blow up gas pipeline near Damascus

Foreign-backed Takfiri militants operating inside Syria have blown up a gas pipeline in the countryside of the capital, Damascus, causing blackouts in a southern region.

Sharmine Narwani – “Security Arc” forms amidst Mideast terror

Many observers are correct in noting that the Middle East is undergoing yet another seismic shift – that the Russian-brokered destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal, a US-Iranian rapprochement, the diminished strategic value of Saudi Arabia and Israel, and a US withdrawal from Afghanistan will all contribute to changing regional dynamics considerably. But what is this new direction? Where will it come from, who will lead it, what will define it? – Saudi High-Level Intelligence behind Liwa-al-Islam Attack on Syrian Chemical Weapons Transport

The involvement of Liwa-al-Islam in the attack on the chemical weapons site outside Damascus, on 21 December, at a time when preparations for a transport were made by the government, in cooperation with the experts of the OPCW and UN, suggests that Liwa-al-Islam has access to extremely sensitive intelligence, which it could not acquire without its close liaison to top-level Saudi Intelligence sources. – Militants’ raids on chemical weapons storage sites look like preplanned action – Russia

Attacks by Syrian militants on chemical weapons storage facilities look like a pre-planned, determined action, Mikhail Ulyanov, deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Security and Disarmament, said on Wednesday.
“There have been frequent attacks by militants on chemical weapons storage sites lately. One gets the impression that this is a determined effort aimed at disrupting the operation,” he said.

‘West trying to ‘flirt’ with Islamic front in Syrian crisis’ – LavrovRT talks to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
Intervjun utskriven som text på Russia Today – Syria lashes out at US, calling it a ‘one-eyed pirate’

Syria lashed out at the United States Tuesday, describing it as a ”one-eyed pirate.” a day after Washington condemned President Bashar al-Assad’s government over an aerial operation over Aleppo. ”The White House is ignoring the crimes committed by the terrorists,” the state news agency SANA said.
”Meanwhile, it condemns what it describes as ”incessant aerial attacks” by Syrian government forces in Aleppo.”
”Washington is a pirate that only looks with one eye,” said the agency, adding that ”in the areas named by the White House… all you have are groups of Saudis, Qataris and Chechens.” – Nearly 10,000 foreign terrorists killed Syria war

A Salafi movement in Jordan has revealed that nearly 10,000 foreign militants were killed in Syria since the foreign-hatched conflict hit the country in 2011.
The so-called Jordanian Jihadi Salafi Movement said that some 9936 extremist militants from different parts of the world, especially from Tunisia, Libya and Iraq, have been killed during the nearly three years of conflict in Syria, Manama Voice news agency reported on Monday.

Robert Parry – UN Investigator Undercuts New York Times on Syria. Assad Government not Responsible for August 21 Chemical Attack

Amid last summer’s rush to judgment on the Aug. 21 Sarin attack in Syria, the New York Times joined the stampede blaming the Assad regime by pushing a “vector analysis” showing where the rockets supposedly were launched, but now that certainty has collapsed.
Ake Sellstrom, the head of the United Nations mission investigating chemical weapons use in Syria, agrees that the vector analysis – at the heart of the New York Times’ indictment of the Syrian government for the deadly Aug. 21 Sarin gas attack – doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.
In a little-noticed comment at a UN press conference on Dec. 13, Sellstrom disputed claims that the launching point for the two missiles, which were recovered after the Aug. 21 attack, could be traced back following the angles of their final descent until they intersected at a Syrian military base about 9.5 kilometers away.
Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom, chief of the United Nations mission to inspect chemical weapons use in Syria, stands next to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon chemical weapons investiaSecretary-General speaks to correspondents before his meeting with A*’ke SellströmInstead, Sellstrom said he accepted as accurate other analyses that estimated the range of the rockets at about two kilometers. “Two kilometers could be a fair guess,” he said, noting that the UN team had consulted its own missile experts on the subject. “If you simulate the flight path, it seems not to meet as may be indicated in the report.”
In other words, the lead author of the UN report on the Aug. 21 incident has contradicted the much-touted “vectoring” claims of a New York Times front-page story and Human Rights Watch, which has been pushing for a U.S. military intervention in Syria. Their “vector analysis” of the two flight paths implicated an elite Syrian military unit, the 104th Brigade of the Republican Guard, based northwest of Damascus, near the Presidential Palace.

Syria: Sky News Gains Access To UK Jihadists

In a series of wide-ranging and frank interviews, the jihadists, who have asked Sky News to protect their identities for fear of a backlash against their families in the UK, reveal that hundreds of young men from Britain have joined the fight against Bashar al Assad’s government and that ”at least” four die each month.
They also claim that the UK remains the largest single source of private fundraising for jihadi fighters, outdoing countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.

Shamus Cooke – Last Chance for Peace in Syria. Will Obama Sabotage the Geneva II Syria Peace Talks?

The war in Syria grinds on, an endless wreckage of shattered limbs and lives. The blood flows across borders, fueling the religious sectarian killing across the Middle East that is the life-blood of the Syrian conflict.
Hopes rose in Syria after Obama’s last minute decision not to “punish Assad” with a missile attack. Then came the U.S.-Iran nuclear peace deal, and it was hoped that peace in Syria was part of the broader shift in U.S. policy, “pivoting” away from the Middle East towards China.
The “Geneva II” Syrian peace talks have been discussed for months, but there always seems to be an endlessly complicated barrier. Contrary to what the media and politicians say, stopping the mass carnage is sadly easy. And it could be done relatively quickly, if the power brokers behind the conflict actually wanted it stopped.
