Intervju med Jeremy Salt – voiceofrussia.com – Syria conflict: buffer zone could trigger a large regional war – expert
Mr Salt also added that though before the major suspicion and blame for chemical weapon use was laid on the Syrian government, now he is almost convinced the chemical weapons attack outside Damascus on August of 21th was the “work of one of these armed groups,” possibly, backed up by an outside government. According to Mr Salt, the only way to control the opposition is “to put pressure on the government supporting these groups to either compel them to drop these weapons or face the loss of arms support and provision of money.”
Mr Salt said that, though they deny it, “it is very clear that the Gulf government and particularly Saudi Arabia is supporting these groups.” He added he is not certain which group is being currently supported by Saudi Arabia.
Mr Salt concluded saying that creating a buffer zone would be impossible, because creating it inside Syria would involve setting up a zone with support and control, involving shooting-down any Syrian aircraft passing the buffer zone, which the Syrian government is unlikely to accept. So, what you would be looking at, if any government tried to do that, would be a deepening of this conflict and possible, that would trigger off a large regional war.”
