voiceofrussia.com – Chemical warhead targeted eastern suburbs of Syria’s Damascus – Russian Foreign Ministry
The missile with a chemical poison gas sarine was launched by Syrian rebels and targeted the eastern suburbs of Damascus. This is according to the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich.
”Early morning of August 21, a homemade rocket carrying an unknown chemical warfare agent was launched on the eastern suburbs of Damascus. The missile resembled the rocket which was used by the rebels on March 19 in Khan al-Asal,” said Lukashevich.
”Moscow believes it is important to carry out an objective and professional investigation of what happened”, the diplomat continued. ”It looks like an attempt to create a pretext for the UN Security Council to side with the opponents of Assad’s regime and thus undermine Geneva-2 talks which are now scheduled for August 28”.
”Once again we urge all those who have the opportunity to influence the armed extremists to make every effort to put an end to provocations with the use of chemical agents,” Lukashevich asserted.
Noteworthy is the fact that ”the biased regional media immediately, as if on demand, began an aggressive information attack, placing the responsibility for the attaks on Assad’s government. All of this can only suggest that we are dealing with a pre-planned provocation,” Lukashevich sttaed.
voiceofrussia.com – Chemical weapons use in Damascus: ‘only a fool can believe it’ – expert
Taleb Ibrahim, a prominent Syrian political analyst and sociologist, gave an interview to the Voice of Russia correspondent Naowaf Ibrahim about the WMDs deadlock in Syria.
”We, in Syria, were very surprised this morning to hear the news of a chemical weapons attack. Sky News, al-Arabiya, al-Jazeera and other TV channels were sort of playing catch-up, each trying to outdo the others in posting more casualties. First, one TV channel said that 60 people had been killed, then another said that there were more than a hundred deaths, the third put the figure at 500, and then the first channel reported 600, and so on and so forth. These things have happened before. As soon as international experts come to Syria, a massive media attack is launched.
The question is whether the Syrian government is as silly as to use chemical weapons the very moment UN chemical weapon experts arrive. Only a fool can believe it. Each time, 24 hours before UN experts are due to arrive, militants put on Syrian army uniforms and start attacking civilians somewhere. They shout threats at civilians in front of cameras and later post the footage on the Internet. It’s a very naïve trick, but some people believe it or pretend to believe.
As for chemical weapons, in an interview with Sky News a year and a half ago, I told them that, according to our intelligence reports, chemical weapons had been shipped to Turkey from Libya. I asked them to publish what I said in order to prevent those weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists. Six months later, militants used chemical weapons against Syrian civilians.”
Christof Lehmann – Syria: Chemical Weapons Attack killing 1200 Unconfirmed
Details remain sketchy after reports emerged about an alleged chemical weapons attack near Damascus, that reportedly has cost dozens, according to some reports hundreds or more than 1.100 lives. An emergency session of the UN Security Council has been called. The reports may be false and intentionally disseminated on the day of the arrival of the UN chemical weapons commission in Damascus.

The timing and location of the reported chemical weapons use – just three days after the team of U.N. chemical experts checked in to a Damascus hotel a few km (miles) to the east at the start of their mission – was surprising.
”It would be very peculiar if it was the government to do this at the exact moment the international inspectors come into the country,” said Rolf Ekeus, a retired Swedish diplomat who headed a team of UN weapons inspectors in Iraq in the 1990s.
”At the least, it wouldn’t be very clever.”

voiceofrussia.com – UN Security Council to meet today on alleged Syria gas attack
The objective of the Security Council consultations is to ”take the temperature and to inform” the 15 members, but it was not expected to result in any formal position, a diplomat said. The diplomat also said it would be difficult for the UN experts to investigate the incident because the alleged attack site was not one of three where the Syrian regime had agreed to UN inspections.
