‘Qatar, Saudi Arabia smuggle tons of weapons into Syria: Analyst
A political analyst says Qatar and Saudi Arabia are smuggling tons of weapons into Syria to help terrorist armed groups fighting the Syrian government, Press TV reports.
“We have many [Persian] Gulf countries openly, they are not denying it, they are sending hundreds of tons of weapons everyday to Syria like Saudi Arabia and Qatar,” Intifadh Qanbar told in an interview with Press TV.
Russia denies entering talks on political transition in Syria
”The Russians are not today attached to the person of Bashar al-Assad,” Fabius said on Friday, adding that the talks focus on a ”Yemen-style” political transition.
But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday rejected the claims, saying that Moscow had not been discussing plans for a political transition in Syria that would include Assad’s departure from power.
”It’s not true that we are discussing Syria’s fate after Bashar Assad. We aren’t dealing with a regime change either through approving unilateral actions at the United Nations Security Council, nor through taking part in some political conspiracies,” Lavrov said following talks with his Iraqi counterpart in Moscow.
UN monitor chief says Syrian rebels being ”challenged”
Sergey Lavrov – On the Right Side of History – Western propaganda continues to distort Russia’s position in respect of the Syrian crisis. It accuses Moscow of supporting Damascus for profit motives, or even criminal solidarity. In this piece, Sergey Lavrov does not expound on his country’s strategic choices, but rather on the principles that underpin his diplomacy. He responds imperturbably to the inanities spouted by Western media, underscoring Moscow’s commitment to international law and its pledge to support people. Lavrov counterpoints the massive popular support enjoyed by President al-Assad and the illegitimacy of the sectarian armed opposition, sponsored from abroad.
There is a certain limit reached by crises in international relations that cannot be overstepped without causing damage to global stability. That is why work aimed at putting out regional fires, including intrastate conflicts, should be carried out as considerately as possible, with no double standards applied. Using a ‘sanctions bat’ leads to dead-end at all times. All parties involved in internal conflicts should be convinced that the international community will form a united front and act in accordance with strict principles in order to stop violence as soon as possible and to reach a mutually acceptable solution through comprehensive dialogue.
Russia is guided only by such principles with regard to intrastate crises, which explains our position on what is happening in Syria
Only by acting in this way we can keep the Middle East from sliding into the abyss of wars and anarchy and thus stay, as it has become fashionable to say, on the right side of history. We are sure that other formulas that involve external intervention in Syria – ranging from blocking TV channels that do not satisfy someone, to increasing arms supplies to opposition groups, to airstrikes – will not bring peace either to that country or to the region as a whole. And that means that those formulas will not be justified by history.
Friday night was a battle zone in Latakia. Everything breaks loose after midnight. Heavy gun battles near the National Tobacco factory, which employs hundreds of workers. I am so afraid of what would happen to that huge building complex? The terrorists are not targeting Army posts, and we have no tanks here. They keep attacking the Tobacco factory. That is a gov’t establishment, but not military. Just like the attacks on oil pipelines, electric stations, they are trying to destroy infrastructure and assets. This is about destruction and chaos.
Syrian opposition groups face major internal conflicts
The Syrian opposition groups, led by the so-called Syrian National Council (SNC), apparently face major internal conflicts.
The opposition leaders held a two-day conference in the Turkish city of Istanbul on June 15.
At the end of the conference on Saturday, a member of the SNC told reporters that there are “disagreements” among the opposition groups.
Former SNC leader Burhan Ghalioun said on the first day of the conference that the Syrian opposition groups “will work towards a unified vision,” referring to the disagreements within the opposition.
Michel Chossudovsky – Hidden US-Israeli Military Agenda: ”Break Syria into Pieces”
A timely article in the Jerusalem Post last month brings to the forefront the unspoken objective of US foreign policy, namely the breaking up of Syria as a sovereign nation state along ethnic and religious lines. The article also confirms the role of Israel in the process of political destabilization of Syria. The JP article is titled: ”Veteran Kurdish politician calls on Israel to support the break-up of Syria’
